Would it be ethical for a superior being to eat humans?

Suppose they don't have to eat us to survive, but they like the way we taste, and they would feel deprived if they didn't eat us. They realize that we have thoughts and feelings, but they're not terribly impressed with us, and they don't think we deserve the same rights as they do.

Of course, if we are not at the top of the food chain, then it is not unethical to eat us. We don't consider it unethical when an alligator eats someone. Tragedy, yes, unethical, no.

Side: Yes

I don't think we'd consider anything an animal or very young human does to be unethical, because they don't know what ethics is and can't be expected to do anything other than act in their own self interest. Should we have higher standards for humans and above?

Side: Yes

Very good point. We would see it as cruel, but we actually usually keep ethics specific to humans.

If the superior being was an evolved human, though... that'd be an interesting argument...

What's your take on that?

The new "humans" would have to be very highly evolved. It would probably be a bad idea based on diseases like mad cow. The new humans should still be pretty close to us genetically, and would probably suffer from the problems that cannibals have.

No other species other than humans seems to attempt to create ethical guides. So I'm not sure how we could impose our ethics on another species. It would be up to that species to determine what ethical standards it should hold itself to. We're just the meat in the sandwich, literally. We don't have to like it or take it lying down; but we can't dictate ethics to other species.

We eat lesser beings, if some day we become the lesser beings then they can eat us ethically. Just like we eat cows etc.

I don't think it would be ethical, especially if they crammed us into tiny cages and force fed us, messed with our genes so we would be full grown they could kill and eat us at 9 instead of 20. No doubt they'd justify it by looking at how we treated animals though.

They may already do, though... I am of the firm "belief" that gods eat people :)
