There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics
How much faith do you put in statistical data? Do you understand the inherent problems with social research and how results are easily skewed by sampling and data collection methods?
State atheism, Secularism with religious freedom, or Church rule? You decide.
State atheism
Anyone professing a religious belief shall be held to be in treason of the State. All religious symbols will be outlawed and religious instutions dismantled.
Secularism with religious freedom
Religion will not be permitted to influence the body politic of the nation and no law shall be passed nor enforced which favors religion. Religious institutions will be free to establish themselves and to actively recruit followers and to conduct rites of worship as they see fit so long as said rites do not undully impact the State.
Church rule
This nation shall be rules by the law of the New/Old Testament, the Torah, or the Qur'an. God's law shall prevail and only one religion will serve as the voice for all.
The age of consent is legally set at 16 in both Canada and Australia and from 16 - 18 in various states of the U.S.
Is this right? Should the age of consent raised (e.g. to 21) or lowered (e.g. 14 or younger)? Some U.S. states allow for legal marriages to occur as young as 13 years (e.g. New York and Hawaii), so would it be reasonable to reduce the legal age of consent to coincide with the marriagable ages in these states?
There's a wealth of empirical data demonstrating an association between certain parts of the brain and certain mental processes. But it’s a chicken and egg question: Does cellular activity produce the mind, or does the mind produce cellular activity?
What do you think CreateDebate?
You don't have to eat the flesh of others if you don't want to. You can still show down on a chuck of cow at McDonalds or a tofu/tempe burger from some hippie if you want. But, should you have the right to eat your fellow man? Think how much you'd save on funeral arrangements!
I remember Maggie Thatcher going to war with Argentina over the Falklands when I was a kid. I'd expected the British Navy to completely route the Argentinians; but not so. While the British won the war in the end, there were considerable losses on both sides in terms of both human lives and military/navel assets.
30 something years down the track and the issue of the Falkland Islands has never really been resolved. Let's solve it here right now before we have to bring in the peacekeeping forces of Jamaica, mon.
I've never banned anyone from my debates and I've not seen any reason to ban anyone. As a liberal lefty, I believe in free speech even if I don't agree or like what it is that you might have to say. But, I've noticed a trend in which some people are so passionatly opposed to free speech and the ideology of liberalism that they ban people from debates even before the debate has actually started.
So, why are you so afraid of free speech?
Do we need to have a discussion about logical fallacies?
I see a lot of interesting debating topics on CD and I often find myself agreeing with peoples conclusions (e.g. that same-sex marriage is OK); but totally disagreeing with their reasons for supporting that conclusion. If we're to debate a point, we need to avoid logical fallacies including appeals to emotion, strawman, and personal attacks.
I created several census questions two weeks ago giving people 14 days to respond: http://www.createdebate.com/debate/show/CreateDebate_Census
With only 9 responses (two of which had to be subject to data exclusion) the results are far from authoritative.
AGE
The CreateDebate community ranges in ages from as young as 13 up to 37 years. With only seven respondants with meaningful data, the mean or average age of a CreateDebate community member is 30 years of age with a Standard Deviation of +/- 12.5 years.
GENDER
Only one out of seven respondents was female. If this were representative of the CreateDebate community (and I assume that it isn't), then 85.7% of the community is male and only 14.3% female.
COUNTRY OF BIRTH
Just over half (57.1%) of the CreateDebate community were born in the United States, 28.6% born in Europe, and 14.3% in Oceania.
COUNTRY OF RESIDENCE
71.4% of the CreateDebate community reside in the United States ( figure which has implications for site advertising). Remaining community memebers reside in the UK and South East Asia (14.3% respectively).
RELIGION
In line with population demographics for most hihg-income nations, the average CreateDebate community member (71.4%) is unlikely to identify with any particular religion. However, this figure needs to be broken down further to elicidate the reality of what is happening at ground level.
28.6% of the community identifies as overtly "atheist", 14.3% "agnostic", and a further 28.6% undecided or unaffiliated.
Only 28.6% of the community professed to being allilated with a mainstream religion (Catholcism and Islam, 14.3% respectively).
The above data on religion is highly unlikely to be accurate given the low response rate to the census.
HIGHEST EDUCATION
42.8% of the CreateDebate commuity have a Masters degree or are presently undertaking a Master's level course.
14.3% of the community have an undergraduate degree or are presently undertaking a degree level course.
14.3% have a college / technical level diploma
And a further 28.6% of the community have an Elementary/Secondary school education or are undertaking said education at present.
OCCUPATION
The data concerning occupation/vocation was too disperse to report any trends in the data.
DATA TRENDS
Agnosticism and religous unaffilation spans the largest age spectrum, ranging from 13 - 38 years of age. Actual atheism tended to be likely between a narrow age band of 23 - 27 years. People who were inclined to more strongly identify with traditional religion tended to be somewhat older between 42 - 48 years of age.
Also with respects to religion, theists tended to exemplify higher educational attainment that non-theists. However, the older age of theists means that they have had more years in which to complete formal academic study. Atheists, agnostics, and non-affilatated community members might simply not have undertaken such studies given the inclination for such persons to be younger than theists. Thus, if this small sample size were in anyway representative, it is likely that education levels for theists/atheists would be on parity if age in years were standardized.
It has become a common practice in hihly letigous societies (e.g. North America) for psychiatrists to conceal certain psychiatric diagnoses from patients. Whereas psychiatrists tend to feel more comfortable using labels such as schizphrenia, depression, anciety, bipolar, and obsessive-compulsive; psychiatrists are less inclined to inform their patients if they have a diagnosis such as borderline personality disorder or any of the other Axis II personality disorders. The two main reasons behind this practice of professional dishonesty is:
1. Feminist claims that the diagnosis of a personality disorder is socially stigmatizing, and
2. The fear of being sued by patient for the emotional distress brought about by said stigma.
I argue that this practice of conceling a personality disorder diagnosis from a patient is both dishonest and disempowering. Knowedge is power, according the French philosopher Michel Foucault, and armed with the knowledge of their real diagnosis patients are empowered to seek out information and make informed decisions regarding their own healthcare and treatments.
