Yes, but it's the people who own the illegal share sites who should face the main punishment.

Hey, if criminals rob your house and leave your things in the park it isn't the passerby who picks up your stuff who the police need to go after, it's the joker who made it possible to take it.

Downloading music without paying for it is robbing artists of their entitled payments

The recording industry robs artists of their pay all the time. Now the playing fields are levelled against the original thieves of artists dues!

How so? All you're doing is lowering the net income of the industry, not the distribution of income, which is what's unfair in the first place.

Illegal means it's against the law, and that's bad. God said Thou shalt not steal so nah nah nah nah nah nah......

We are not discussing whether or not downloading music is illegal (pretty sure we all know that it is.) We are disputing whether or not illegal downloading is stealing.

So are you agreeing? Saying that the record industry steals due to their greed form artists and therefore the downloaders and the industry will see each other in hell?

Legally we own music,, it is our property, so stealing is defined as "take (another person's property) without permission or legal right and without intending to return it".

It is stealing. No less, no more. If you do that in a store, then you go to jail. Why does that not apply to the things people take from the Internet without paying for, when they should be? If the company or person wants to give it away for free, then fine, more power to them. But, to just take it from them, when it is their livelihood, that is really wrong.

Spotify will not let you save music to your computer and copy it onto a disc. So lets keep that in mind. if you were selling a product for money, and you found that it had somehow got leaked onto the internet for free usage, would you be mad? I know i would

You wouldn’t steal a car, you wouldn’t steal a handbag, you wouldn’t steal a television, you wouldn’t steal a movie. Downloading pirated films is stealing.

For many people, downloading music is a way to test music out before they buy a CD of the artists work - many people will later buy an album if they like the tracks they have downloaded.

Legally it is wrong and morally it is wrong. You can be legally prosecuted for illegally downloading music

Technically no. Theft is the dishonest appropriation of property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving him of it - if I remember rightly.

You have to pay for a concert, and cds so what gives you the right not to pay for the music that YOU listen too? Artists and producers dont get the money that they deserve for working and creating music. They make the music for our benefit so why not give them some credit for it? The artist do Not originally intend for there music to be given out or downloaded for free otherise they would of all already put it on the internet and made it LEGAL to download. In conclsion, other people can NOT sell the artists hard work and effort for free, we SHOULD pay and give them some credit.

Theft is theft... if some one has gone to the trouble of creating something of their own, it is their decision whether or not they would like to charge money for it. Downloading music illegally completely disregards this and thus is considered theft. Would you steal a CD from a store? The only reason people are downloading music illegally is because of its accessibility, which does not change the fact that it is wrong.

"stealing" is defined by the boundaries of ownership that we create. We need to consider whether or not it is suitable to consider the artist or the recording industry as "owning" the music. If we extend boundaries too far we are likely to all be able to fall under the accusations of theft. In the end ownership is generally defined based upon financial gains and positions, NOT logically thought out or derived senses of ownership from a more philosophical context. If you consider it from outside the fiscal framework you will struggle to be able to claim ownership to anything.
