Life needs a purpose very similarly to how life needs sustenance. Sustenance, sustains life. It gives it the energy to push on, literally. If we didn't eat, if flowers didn't photosynthesize, if maggots didn't decompose bodies, we and it would have nothing with which to grow. Similarly if we didn't have the purpose of growing, we would have no desire to keep eating and thus living.

A person can kill themselves whenever they want, they usually only have that desire, after they've lost purpose.

We fill our lives with all sorts of subjective, pseudo purposes, like a good job, fame, money, etc, and losing those purposes can and often do drive some to kill themselves, but the underlying purpose of simply living is driving them achieve those non-purposes.

I'm not sure you are arguing the correct side. From your description, life is it's own purpose. Humans make up the rest. A sense of purpose or reason to continue may be a survival mechanism that only humans seem to need. Other animals just live.

Living being the meaning of life, and me choosing this side, as opposed to the other one, is mostly a semantics argument, which no one would really benefit from us having.

So in a sense you're right, their is no more meaning to life than life itself, but in a sense I too am right, in that life is it's own meaning, which is technically a meaning.

Side: Agree

A life without meaning seems hopeless. I am going through that right now, as I just lost my wife. With her gone, I am having to find new purpose in life. It's a difficult road to travel down, to be certain.

Everyone's life purpose is to cause events they consider good to occur. You can continue to honor your life's purpose through almost every loss imaginable. Not to discount the anguish that comes with loss of loved ones, but you need not lose sight of your life's purpose EVER.

The purpose of life is to make you wish you were dead. Life slowly steals your eye sight, your hearing, your hair, your libido, your memory, your health. It also gives you wrinkles, gray hairs, incontinence, arthritis, brittle bones and slew of other ailments.

Life is a bitch.

Life is a sexually transmitted, terminal, disease. ;)

I really don't see how this is related to the current argument? And also it is quite wrong in my eyes. Would you rather get to enjoy your life while you have it, or never even be born at all? Would you rather never get to meet anyone who makes you happy or meet people and make them happy too?

Side: Disagree

Yeah, I guess I should have posted this on the other side. What I meant is that life already has a purpose and that purpose is to make you wish you were dead. And it has to be that way. Otherwise there would be way too many people on this planet.

I guess another way of saying it is that life's purpose is to get you to reproduce before making you wish you were dead. ;)

This is nonsense. Religion is plaguing Earth for the tyrants to brainwash the masses. Never fall for it. Life needs no meaning you just are here. Enjoy it! :D

That is nonsense. We need people who are passionate about things if we want to really enjoy life. Whatever you are passionate about, what ever gives you the deepest happiness, whatever you are willing to fight for, even GASP! suffer for....you can think of that as your religion.

Life is the purpose. It is it's own goal. Humans may seek a purpose while they are living, but life itself doesn't need a purpose. It just is.

Life does not need a purpose. When you need something it means you can't live without it. But plenty of people live without a purpose. They just have some fun and don't have many goals and they don't make any huge achievements in life. A purpose is not necessary in life. Plenty of people live without one. You can say that you would prefer life to have a purpose but that is different. Humanity would and does still exist with people who don't have a purpose. Therefore the answer is no life does not need a purpose.
