Women in the main are unfunny. If you go on to quote a few female comedians than you have missed the point. (also, if it is any indication, the list of funny male comedians is endless and not made up of 5 or 6 prominent names that always pop up). First, in theory women don't have to be funny. Men evolved in competition for women, and one of the ways to barter a lover is through clever and ironic wordplay (especially when men are in generally, "fantastically ugly). Thus, the female counterpart evolved as primarily an audience. It's also noteworthy that the funniest female comedians are dykes, self deprecating Jews, or butch. In other words: Emulations of Men! In my experience all my guy friends are terrifically funny in some way, shape or form. The girls on the other hand are merrily satisfied being the ones from which the laughter springs. On those rare occasions when I hear the female ilk attempt humor, it is either through the retelling of a story and thus not a creation of their own, but a relaying of experience ("Let me tell you about my last period!"), repeating a meme or already known joke, or is down right malicious and insulting (ranging from fat, to "take a shower", or various other things which make up whatever the antithesis for wit is). That does not mean they don't have a sense of humour. People are hesitant to admit that women are generally unfunny because many equate cleverness, wit, homour etc. with intelligence. This can be true in some ways. The ability for a good comedian to come up with a comeback to a heckler can be based on memory, observation, vocabulary comprehension, processing speed, and perceptual reasoning speed. These are the things that most IQ tests test for. However, just because you aren't good at contriving jokes, does not mean you lack these things. The ability to pull a joke out of thin air just tends to be more obvious because it happens in every type of forum. So are women unfunny? Terribly unfunny I'm afraid. But that doesn't make them defective. Women, it is proven, have better language comprehension and think abstractly when it comes to communication and conceptualization. They are also more nuanced (whereas comedy is direct, the nuances being shallow ironies) and therefore surpass men in other things. So they are by no means inferior. They are just women. They are who they are. I love them all the same/ Why Women Still Aren't Funny

In order to be funny, you need to be able to see the humor in things. For example, if men are practicing with their bows and arrows and one of them gets shot in the ass, the other men will spill their beer laughing while a woman runs up screaming, "Oh my God! Call 911, get me a band-aid quick!" which only makes the men laugh even more. This is an evolutionary advantage because if women didn't take things seriously, we would become extinct. I mean, women are pretty much responsible for nurturing and preserving the species. Someone has to be the responsible adult. Side: Correct, they're not.
not me id be lmao,my mate and i were walking along talking when i could see she was about to walk into a tree ,of course i didnt warn her,i was already mentally pissing my pants laughing.BUT i am kinda unlike most woman i know....maybe its all our split personalities in conflict with me. Women are not funny. I have never met one or seen one on tv that I find remotely funny. Women can only talk about or discuss serious situations and cannot grasp the concept of an amusing hypothetic situation that whilst would be unlikely to occur, would be funny if it did. Sadly most female comedy acts are extremely unoriginal and usually full of dross on how pathetic men are. Great.... not funny, not interested and not ever going to be funny no matter what woman decides to do it. The only situation where a woman can generate humour is unintentionally, for example when they fall over. Side: Correct, they're not.
Listen to me carefully, and may all of you will learn something practical today. Being funny or intelligent are just resources used by the imperfect or poor males to get some sex. For that reason, womens doesn't need those resources. Any of you know about a great female comedian? (I mean, not second line comedian like Whoopi Goldberg or that woman on Seinfield) Side: Correct, they're not.

Here is an article worth reading geoff. He backs up the idea that men are funny for evolutionary purposes and cites a Stanford-medical-school study that investigates the reasons for the humor gap. I recomend watching that video I posted in my other post too. Side: Correct, they're not.
That is not true. Some of the funniest people I know are women, and they do not do it to get men's attention.. they do it to get everyone's attention. There might not be as many women that earn a living with comedy.. but that is just because they have more important things to do in life... Side: Wrong!

I've never met a funny woman in my entire life. Sarah Silverman is NOT funny Kathy Griffen is NOT funny Margaret Cho is NOT funny Come to think of it, all of the class clowns and funny people in my school were always guys Women simply don't need to be funny. They sit back and let men entertain them. Their job is to sit there and look pretty, while collecting free dinners and movie tickets from the funny guys who wanted to impress them with the humor Side: Correct, they're not.

When I envision a man who thinks in such close-minded, "GENERAL" terms (or one who goes by the moniker hamandcheese), I picture him sitting on a couch, drinking some stale PBR and laughing WAY too hard at Dane Cook stand up. Oh, did you not realize Homer Simpson is only funny because he's a satirical character? There, there. Side: Wrong!

First of all, humour is subjective...so deciding the ability of what gender is more capable of humour would first mean having to put limits on what humour is. Furthermore, saying that humour is the only way to attract a mate and that only men can profit from its use would be false. It is a tool of attraction on both sides, but not the only one. Not to mention, humour also serves a function in developing our brains.
Finally, it would seem to me, that if you looked at the evolution of humans, that women would be more apt for humour because when we were a hunter gatherer society, men would separate from the tribe and needed to be quiet during the hunt, while women would stay at the camp in groups chatting in order to ward off potential predators. More talking, more likelihood of humour. (haha...I just realized that my response makes me seem like I have absolutely NO sense of humour and I was defending those without it...damn internet!) Your evolutionary reasons ignore a lot of the facts. First, that women are purposefully more emotional. They were the primary care taker of young and needed emotion among other reasons to protect the gene carrying offspring at all cost. Emotion can get in the way of making funny jokes, when many jokes point out faults, are satirical, etc. Moreover, in biology we've found that the males normally compete for the female. One of the ways to do that is to woo her with humour. At least thats what Christopher Hitchens speculates, adding on to a Standford-medical-school study that investigated the humour between men and women. Men are for the most part sperm machines. When horny, they aren't that picky. When sexually sober, they aren't that picky either. Women on the other hand would be much more selective because it's 1. a 10 month commitment whereas men can spread his seed with not much of a wait time in between 2. women have a much more limited number of sex cells whereas men have a seemingly unlimited capacity. For these reasons female mammals are picky whereas men aren't as much. Side: Wrong!
most of them aren't funny, but some can be when they make sexist jokes. like sarah silvermen and amy shumer. and this hot comedian who talks about how even she doesn't think females are funny. basically, when women place themselves as inferior or in strong sexual manners, they can actually be funny. but whenever i see a woman trying to joke about her relationships and shit, it's boooooring. Side: Only the degrading kinds
I'm funnier than my husband, so that says something. Plus, I think women can be funny because they do some pretty stupid stuff (like applying makeup, while drinking a cappucino, while talking on their cell phone, while driving). Remember that "what would a hard of hearing genie say?" joke that was up here a few days ago? That's my life, and I"m the genie. And it makes people the really know me laugh their butts off. I also have, hmmmm, speech issues that make them laugh. Ya see, basically, I grew up not hearing speech correctly, so I taught myself how to speak based off what I learned in first grade about english and how certain arrangements of letters tell ya how to say it... ya well, 15 years later I get an awesome slap in the face that what I learned was totally bogus because most words don't apply with that rule. For instance, I pronounced Effeil tower as "ee-full" tower, then I find out it's actualy "eye-full" or maybe it's "eye-fill?" And my most recent, Duchess was "douche-ess",... after I learned that douche was "do-shhh" and not "do-ch".... seriously..... My disability has made me a laughing-stock... It's atrocious! But I learned to laugh with it, what else am I to do... besides learn the correct way to speech and ask "what?" a bazillion times instead of repeating what I think someone says. Other than that, "how do you get a black kid to stop jumping on the bed?" I hope you know the answer. It's the only joke I can ever remember. And I'm not racist. Now I've proved my case, women can be funny. Side: Wrong!

well, most of them are not. you cant make a generalization based on that most of them arent. my mom has the WORST humor, but my grandma makes me laugh every time. It also is based on your sense of humor. a cheesy joke could be the stupidest thing to one person while it could be the funniest thing on earth. And you have to define what funny is. Do they try to make jokes, are they naturally funny, or are they so dorky they're funny? it all depends on your perspective. Side: Wrong!

It's not so much that women aren't funny. It's that a lot of women are afraid to look stupid or gross. Comedy is about self-confidence and not giving a damn about being elegant or classy. The best female comedians or funny women have been the ones who will do physical comedy, gross-out comedy, or say something that might not be pleasant and could offend people. Side: Wrong!

By the strictest terms: "Women are not funny" is difficult to debate because of wording. Humour is interesting in that judging whether something is funny or not depends on personal taste and claiming that someone is funny or not funny is a subjective description and opinions will vary from person to person. With this being said lets state some points points that would be generally agreed upon by the large majority of people that relate to this topic. 1. There exist funny women. 2. There are not as many successful female comedians as their are successful male comedians. For some reason those who choose to agree with this argument overall think this is enough justification for the statement women are not funny. To say women are not funny is a fallacy because just because group a has an attribute greater than group b does not mean group b does not have that attribute. I cast my vote against this argument because it is illogical. However saying that generally women are not funny is perfectly valid as long as you realise that this is not an intrinsic quality. Contrary to what Christopher Hitchens would like you to believe being funny is not an evolutionary quality. Men did not evolve a humour gene or anything of the sort. Humours is tied heavily to language and interconnecting ideas and culture reference points, what you find humorous depends heavily on your familiarity with it. Basically humour is something that changes with culture, something that changes at are rate so grand that you couldn't reasonably say that humour is selected for through evolution. Also humour is an effect that stems from intricacies in language, not something evolution has a part in. The reason behind women not being as funny as men is purely cultural. Society encourages men to be outspoken and women to be pleasant and submissive. The qualities that are required to be a comedian is something encouraged in men and not women. These qualities are self assuredness, unapologetic honesty and and a refusal to pander. Since men and women both have no problem in understanding a joke I believe the mental faculties involved in their formulation are there, but what is encouraged in one gender but not the other are the qualities that give rise to a good comedian. Also did people forget that there is no point arguing about generalisations because they misrepresent the population they are trying to represent? Side: Wrong!
I agree. And also, while we're busy cleaning the house and potentially talking gossip and emotional junk with our girlfriends (which is why I don't have girlfriends...haha), the men are busy talking insults and making jokes about everything possible (preferably without women around to yell at them for being rude). :-) Side: Wrong!

People who think women aren't funny are usually the same ones that think being funny entails being obnoxious and arrogant. There might be fewer female standups, but that doesn't prove anything about women's wit. Also, I think women will sometimes bite their lip before telling an indelicate or cruel joke, whereas men will just tell the joke because "we couldn't resist." My sister is funny. My girlfriend is funny. Ellen Degeneres is funny. And here's a clip of a female comic in Chicago. The noise that erupts after the punchline would be laughter. this woman has a Morrisey impression
Side: Wrong!
Interesting you say that, in my experience female comedians are more prone to be crude and obnoxious. That video should be on the other side of the debate - she is not funny in the slightest. The audience are giddy in the extreme - perhaps she was funny prior to this segment (doubtful). Side: Correct, they're not.

I made an argument that most women are too self-conscious to show how funny they are or do the unpleasant gross outrageous things they need to do. The other side of that coin is the female comedians who try to hard to compensate, because they think no one will laugh if they don't attempt what that one guy comedian's known for doing. Side: Correct, they're not.

any funny woman would admit that women aren't typically that funny. Its because first funny women are smart and its obvious that women arent that funny and two because people that are funny dont care as much about stupid shit like whether women are funny or not they just wanna laugh and have a good time. It really depends on your own sense of humor and how many people you meet & see and their backgrounds, for example I have a friend (male) the only jokes he makes are jokes that are considered puns. I find them hilarious but my friends doesn't see both the point of or why they're funny. If he was the only male we were to meet, ever I would have the perspective that males are hilarious but she would think that they weren't. So there are multiple factors that contribute and so while I think women as a whole might not seem funny to you they may to someone else. Side: Wrong!
