Pope Okays Same-Sex Civil Unions, Is Marriage Next?

Pope Francis leaves door open for same-sex unions

Marriage can only be between a man and a woman, but the Roman Catholic Church could tolerate some types of same-sex civil unions, Pope Francis said in a wide-ranging interview published Wednesday in an Italian newspaper.

The interview with Corriere della Sera, translated by the Catholic News Service, suggested that Francis viewed the unions as a practical way to protect property rights and access to health care.

"Matrimony is between a man and a woman," he said. But he added that efforts to "regulate diverse situations of cohabitation (are) driven by the need to regulate economic aspects."

Marriage is next, it's inevitable. The opposition is fading; states have legalized it; the numbers show that more people are in favor of it than those who are not. This debate is almost over, lets not add any more fuel to the heated arguments that have been repeated time and time again. Although opponents will argue, saying that the pope okaying same-sex civil unions, doesn't mean that same-sex marriage will be next (Slippery slope fallacy), the truth is, there's more than enough sufficient evidence to prove it.

Once again, can you make your own argument instead of just throwing links around at as us? You're not even responding to the argument, which isn't debate. If you want to preach, you can go to a different site.

Judging by the growth of secular modernism in Europe, an audience which the current Pope is aiming to promote Catholicism towards, I believe that eventually same-sex marriage will be allowed within the Roman Catholic Church.

Now I have a PhD in Applied Religious and Social Studies, which makes me something of an expert on the matter. It is clear that the new Pope is progressive on a wide range of social matters and is trying to reduce the popular association the Catholic Church has with conservative stubbornness. We can already see evidence of this as he has openly reached out towards atheists and other faiths, likewise he has expressed a desire to diminish the hostile relations of the Church and homosexuals.

Thus with his approval of same-sex unions, many commentators see this as the first step on a road which will eventually lead to the acceptance of same-sex marriage.

Shouldn't that be:

Pope Francis leaves BACK door open for same-sex unions ;)

If the Catholic priests can't marry their boyfriends, no one can!

Seriously though... The church needs to evolve with the times or else they will become obsolete. Although, allowing same-sex marriage would be a huge leap for the Catholic church because it is a direct contradiction to what they have been preaching for thousands of years. Too bad they can't go back and tweak the Bible like they used to.

Jesus: .. But from the beginning of creation .. God made them male and female ..

for this reason a man shall leave his father and mother .. and the two shall become one flesh .. so they are no longer two .. but one flesh .. what therefore God has joined together .. let no man separate ....... Mark 10:6-9 .. http://dadmansabode.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=750#p750 .. truth does not change and is not subject to the unstable whims of man

I'm sorry, you're just quoting the bible (and adding dots). I'm not sure what point your making... are you saying that people can only get married who are having sex? Because gay people have sex.

It said in the description that the church recognizes matrimony as a union between a man and a woman not as a union, so no it will not happen unless they rewrite the Bible.

So we have to follow every single law in the Bible? We don't have to rewrite it, but not everything in the Old and New Testament remains relevant forever.

No the same thing is gonna happen as always. The vatican is gonna hastily correct it .
