Money Can't Buy Happiness.... Or Can It?

Everytime I hear this phrase I think "yeah, right!"

What are your thoughts?

No, it can't.

It buys temporary materialistic happiness that will end once it is over used. Money can never buy you love, family, and true friends which are the keys to happiness. It will buy you fake friends and once your money is over, those friends are over too.

You say that money can only buy temporary, materialistic happiness, but isn't happiness in itself temporary? Isn't happiness simply nothing but brief moments as well? So what's the difference between feeling happy over a new handbag I bought with money compared to the happiness of having a friend? It's all just briefly anyway. So please explain where the difference lie

Money bought be a dog. I love him and he makes be happy therefore money bought me happiness. Money bought me a game and I had fun playing the game. I met friends on the game which bring me even more happiness.

Money CAN buy happiness but it doesn't always.

That's great that money bought you a dog but isn't it the dog that makes you happy. Say you never payed for your dog and it was given as a gift. Would you not be happy or content with your dog because you didn't buy it? Money can buy things that make you happy but it would not be money itself. Pretend you have a million dollars and you decide to spend it on nothing. Would you be happy? This money would have no purpose. With this money you can buy a house, security, a new phone, and anything you like and these things can make up the ideal life.

Money only buys happiness for a short time. It is like Christmas Day when you are nine. You play with that new toy for a week or two then it just becomes one of the many toys you have, nothing special. Money works the same way, another day another new toy. Trying to buy happiness is like a dog chasing its own tail. Around and around he goes trying to catch something that he cannot. Happiness will never be bought.

I don`t agree with you that happiness will never be bought. Can you imagine if you are a homeless man and you live in poverty, will you be happy? To my mind with the help of money people can become happier because due to money all basic physical needs are satisfied; for such people it is enough to have any shelter, warmth, available food or water supply, and they could feel safety. In these situations, money absolutely will make you happier.

Side: Gimme money!!!

money can buy things which bring happiness, and in that sense, yes it can buy happiness. but then again it also depends on each individuals definition of happiness. it may buy one person happiness yet bring another nothing.

Side: maybe but maybe not i'm decisive huh

Money not only can't bring happiness, in some cases it can actually bring UNhappiness. Think about it. Say you somehow end up with several million dollars. You end up getting in a fight with one of your friends, who then comes back and apologizes to you. Or hell, it could be even simpler than that--you start dating someone. How do you know if they really like you, or just your money? You don't. You'll never know for sure who your true friends are again, and you'll always wonder. You'll have to spend the rest of your life watching out for the huge numbers of phonies that just want your money. I can't imagine anyone being very happy in that kind of situation.

Side: No, it can't.

in our capitalistic society, success is measured by how many material things you have (the biggest thing being money). i believe that money will boost your pride to a point where you are over confident and cocky. todays politicians are going through that process right now. pride is the root of our economis problems today.bank owners politicians, basically anyone with a high authority are stealing money to fuel their pride. the zen masters of our world today, people that have reached true happiness, have let go of material things. Remember, you dont own things, they own you.

If you want to split hairs, and I do, then you can't say that money buys happiness, although you can buy some very awesome things with money. These are the things that cause happiness. Without money, you can still have happiness, it's just much easier to do it with the money to buy things.

Side: No, it can't.

As The Beatles said: "Money Can't Buy Me Love." That is so true and it can only buy temporary happiness. After the money is gone so too will your friends fall by the wayside and certainly a love interest will go as well...unless you met that person and fell in love prior to the windfall of money in your life. Money can only buy material things that will keep you 'happy' for a moment or two, but nothing lasting because you'll always want more and you'll always want newer or better. Money simply makes life easier to live than living without it or living on a lot less.

No, money can't buy you happiness. Happiness lies in family, friends, loved ones and etc

But not having any money at all will cause unhappiness

So in my humble opinion an average person needs:

1.People to be with, love and be loved back

2.Just enough money to get on in life (People in most cases can't balance it out between money and friends)

Its obvious that money cant buy us happiness. Even if it does, it would be fake or temporary materialistic happiness. Money can never buy us true happiness e.g. family, friends, love. But it does go to explain why there are so many people willing to pay $1000s per year for fleeting "services" like $4 ice cream cones & $5 cups of coffee (10-25X normal grocery store costs). They pay for "experience" rather than the consumable item. My "hard" purchases always make me happier! I get to see & use them 1000s of times over many years!

Money is the most obvious measure of one’s status, so it is easy to confuse the two, but they are certainly not the same thing at all. It is easy to point to many evils committed for the sake of status in which money was not involved at all.

I just wanna say that for people who in life just wants to be on teh top, be popular and have status, money can do them happy. But in my point of you the main thing in our life it is to be happy, to have family and health. yes you can spend your money on health, but you can' buy family, love and support. Just imagine your death? what you will think about? about money? nooo. about love, family. You won't bring money with you on the sky, but love will be always with you. I wanna say that choose love, LIFE, enjoy your life withuot money, because it is just nessasary, but not life.

Side: No, it can't.

It seems to me beyond any reasonable doubt that with the help of money you cannot buy love and health. For example, if you found that you have cancer and no one medicine can help you and it is inevitably, plenty of money would not help you. People spend all their health to earn money, but in old age they spend all their money to get health. And about love, you cannot get love from person who has not the same feelings, who indifferent to yours and with the help of money you cannot buy the true love

Most people associate happiness with objects or ownership of things.for instance i bet a lot of u will be happy if u got the ps3 or the xbox 360,some of u will be happy if u get a foreign vacation or if u got a magnificient new mansion which had everything u desired. These things can only be bought buy money and power ,therefore u would think that your happiness is dependant on money. But these objects of desire do not give lasting happiness.Sooner or later we get bored of these things and we look forward for the next thing that would give us happiness. This can continue endlessly and take over your life and when we dont get these objects of we become unhappy and dejected,so ironically pursuit of happiness results in unhappiness. Therefore money can not buy happiness

In coffee shops, on commuter trains and over breakfasts of high-fructose corn syrup crunch, millions of people have no doubt pointed to the Martha Stewart headlines the past few days and made some snarky remark like, "See? That shows you that money can't buy happiness."

Certainly Stewart is not happy now that she's been convicted. Last week, when former WorldCom honcho Bernie Ebbers did the perp walk, he didn't look too happy, either. The Enron guys? Same story. Got rich. Not happy.

All might have avoided their fates had they paid more attention to science. There has been an explosion in happiness research lately. The field even has its own peer-reviewed publication called Journal of Happiness Studies, with articles such as "Personality, Psychosocial Variables, and Life Satisfaction of Chinese Gay Men in Hong Kong." (In case you were wondering, they're modestly satisfied with their lives.)

Anyway, the preponderance of scientific research — which runs from studies of the brain to statistical analysis — suggests that money cannot, in fact, buy happiness.

Money can't buy you love. Worshipping Mammon foments evil ways. Materialists are shallow and unhappy. The greenback finds itself in tough times these days. Whether it’s Wall Street bankers earning lavish multi-million-dollar bonuses or two-bit city managers in Los Angeles County bringing in higher salaries than President Obama the recessionary economic climate has helped spur outrage and revulsion at those of us collecting undeserved lucre.

Wealthy people have a bad rep. Sure, there are philanthropists like Warren Buffet and Bill Gates, who have given billions of their net worth away and have made the world a better, healthier, safer place. But, sadly, they are an exception. American families who make over $300,000 a year donate to charity a mere 4 percent of their incomes. The statistic should not be surprising, as studies by University of Minnesota psychologist Kathleen Vohs and her collaborators have shown that merely glimpsing dollar bills makes people less generous and approachable, and more egocentric.

Now come a new set of studies that reveal yet another toll that money takes. An international team of researchers led by Jordi Quoidbach report in the August 2010 issue of Psychological Science that, although wealth may grant us opportunities to purchase many things, it simultaneously impairs our ability to enjoy those things.

Their first study, conducted with adult employees of the University of Liège in Belgium showed that the wealthier the workers were, the less likely they were to display a strong capacity to savor positive experiences in their lives. Furthermore, simply being reminded of money (by being exposed to a picture of a huge stack of Euros) dampened their savoring ability.

Quoidbach and his colleagues’ second study was even cleverer. Participants aged 16 to 59 recruited on the University of British Columbia campus were entrusted with the not unpleasant task of tasting a piece of chocolate. Before accepting the chocolate, however, they were obliged to complete a brief questionnaire. For half of the participants, this questionnaire furtively included a page with a picture of Canadian money (allegedly for an unrelated experiment), and for the other half, it included a neutral picture.

Although the ostensibly irrelevant photo was unlikely to have elicited more than a cursory glance, it had a pronounced effect on the volunteers’ behavior. Those “primed,” or subconsciously reminded, of money ended up spending less time consuming the chocolate and were rated by observers as enjoying it less.

How to explain these results? The researchers argue that because wealth allows people to experience the best that life has to offer, it ultimately undermines their ability to savor life’s little pleasures. Once we’ve had the opportunity to drink the finest French wines, fly in a private jet, eat foie gras with edible gold leaf, and watch the Super Bowl from a box seat, coffee at Starbucks with a friend, a sunny day after a week of rain, or an unexpected Reese’s peanut butter cup on our desks just doesn't provide the same jolt of happiness it used to. Indeed, a landmark study of lottery winners showed just that: People who had won between $50,000 and $1,000,000 (in 1970s dollars) were less impressed by life’s simple pleasures than people who experienced no such windfall.

A lot of people confuse pleasure with true happiness. But happiness is something that lasts much longer...

Money can't buy happiness. It only helps people to have sth they enjoy with. But just for short period of time.

You can buy a house, but you can't buy cosiness and warnth in it. Money can provide you with a big company that surround you, but it can't give you the true friends, that will love and be with you in any circumstances.

There are so many examples of people that have a lot of money but are very unhappy. And conversely, not so wealthy and rich people can be happy and satisfied with their lives.

I agree with that money can help people be happier. For example if people have money, they cannot worry about their children's future, etc.

But it's very important to not forget about life's true valuables in pursuit of money.

So what is happiness? As Denis Waitley said: "Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace and gratitude."

Side: No, it can't.

MONEY CAN'T BUY HAPPINESS! Money is one of the important thing of our life, but happiness is the most important. Some believes that if you have money you can buy everything, but it is wrong. You can not buy feelings. Felling should be true! Happiness depend on person, not on money. You can be happy without money.

Money buys happiness. Not lasting happiness, transient happiness; a cold happiness which melts away after a wile. It's a sad happiness. If one were to get a new computer and feel the jittery ecstatic feeling when one gets something new, one probably wouldn't feel very ecstatic when turning it on only to type an essay for school, or write a memo for work. And if money buys happiness that lasts the in essence that computer should make you happy enough that you don't need to buy another computer, or anything else for that matter until it breaks.

I tend to think it can't, at least not true happiness and the peace that comes with it. Often times people get so materialistic, they want the biggest, best things to show superiority over others and sure they may find happiness for a time with it, but eventually it goes away and they need to work more to get more.

But then, if anyone would like to give me money I'd be happy to test this question out better! ;D

Buying happiness using money, is like loving a person for his/her physical appearance. L Love for these things is sure to please and give a sense of happiness but as these physical appearances change, love for the person vanishes. Similarly, at some point of time when the person runs out of money, the pleasures he gained through them(not materialistic) will not last for long. Thus, proving the fact that there are things that cannot be bought for happiness. Few of such things are life, time, love and health.

Because every body knows that watching it with with frnds and families will give more happiness than watching it alone. While watching it alone the happiness will be temperory, that is, it will be limited to the duration of the movie, but watching it with frnds and family will give more happiness that it will become memory, even after many years it will give a smile on your face when you think of it., that is happiness

What I'm trying to say is money will give only temperory happiness, to get a permanent happiness u need frnds and family and I'm not saying that u don't néed money at all, we need money only to meet the basic requirements..

It can buy you short-term happiness, no doubt. But if you want to count on it buying you long-term happiness, good luck because it ain't going to happen. Being a truly happy person comes from within oneself; no amount of materialism and money in the world can grant you that. But seriously, it'll buy you short-term happiness... such as, a trip to the country of your choice for a week to relax and tour and so on. It'd be nice to have money so I could do that stuff at the very least, but if I started counting on it to make me happy, I'd probably end up using it the wrong way the same way people that drink so much alcohol think it makes them happy. WRONG. It's a mask.

You can meet the love of you life, a lovely woman with a homely face... then overhaul her.

It's simple. Money can't buy love, but it can make it.

Then again, you can be happy without money. Ie. I wouldn't be happy in a mansion.... I'd be happy in a small cottage style house. I also wonder if maybe the homeless might be very happy, and often I find myself wanting that freedom from stuff and things.

Happiness is an emotion. What it's derived from varies from person to person. However, there are universal derivatives of happiness that, generally speaking, money will aid in bringing about for a person. Therefore, money directly aids in the acquisition of the sensation of happiness. However, it only helps. Money does not automatically = happiness. You still have to work for it. It's very much like having a car as opposed to only your legs. Although it will help get you places, you still have to drive it to get to where you want to go. However, it would be much easier to drive than to run on foot.

To add to this, I am what is called a subclinical psychopath. An estimated 1/100 of the world's population are psychopaths. I have not felt 'happiness' in years--I am currently eighteen years old. In fact, I am probably literally incapable of feeling happiness. I am capable of feeling momentary contentment, etc. but never anything lasting. No amount of money will make me happy. However, I am always on the lookout for thrills. Money is absolutely necessary in my world in this respect. Delicious foods, speeding (120 mph), sadistically derived sexual pleasure--be it through the debasement of others or through rape/physical torture--are all appealing, to me. Money can provide me with entry into a fine dining establishment, a nice car, and a sex slave (they exist, even today. Human trafficking, etc.). I am entirely serious. Btw, psychopathy is, again, not that rare. You probably have a friend or family member who you are unaware is a psychopath that is a psychopath.

Money itself is not happiness, but you could use it to go hang out with a friend at the movies... Chances are you'd be happy!

Bullshit.. it can... just not indefinitely... and that is not money´s fault, that is the fault of the human senses, for all constants dull the senses. So if you have a constant flow of money your senses will ruin it......... and the cure..........: DRUGS!..... and when your senses have gotten used to the drugs.....: stronger Drugs.

Pung Sviti...that is such an interesting name! Can you give us its origins or meaning?

Side: No, it can't.

On my travels in Norway I met an Icelander (they´re language is very close to how the old vikings used to speak) - who was telling me about the vikings. The vikings have descriptive names sort of like the Indians. Pungsviti means something like "one who knows from his gut" or one who is very intuitive

Yes it can. It just doesn't last long. So I guess you could say money buys pleasure.

So if you are an atheist then, yeah. But I'm not an atheist.

I'm sorry, but what does that have to do with atheism?

Because Atheists only care about pleasure?

That isn't true. Again, you are judging people what you know nothing about. Which, again, isn't very Christian of you.

ya i damn agree with it.. money is not every thing but it makes you everything. and you can observe this difference in real life. a rich man has a strength in his life that you could not see in a middle class or poor man.

So, it shows money has power..

Sorry this took so long, I never got around to it.

I wasn't trying to attack atheism. I'm just saying if I was an atheist and after death there was nothing, then yeah as long as I'm rich I'm good.

But I did fail to think about family, money can't keep a family together, or make someone truly love you. So I'm gonna change to no.

However I do hate in the movies when it's like "oh this rich person has it all but they can't be happy, better get that poor folksy guy to teach them a lesson". Disney crap.

In conclusion: profit is good, just not enough.

From my point of view the money is the eternal, important and necessary thing, but for someone it is only the sheet of paper that does not change anything. Money affects career, relationships choices, our attitude to people who surrounding us and so on. After that I could not call money that is just piece of paper, because it has influence on our character and behavior on better or worse side. I guess that money makes people happy. The more money you have, the happier you will be. We feel satisfaction from these expensive things because it is prestigious and fashionable, because we can do one more step to our developing future, we always do it step by step.

You are free to disagree with me but I believe that if huge amount of money is in the intelligent hands and this person has strong character and clear thoughts, he will be successful in life and he will be happy. This person will always know what he can do with it. However, if the person did not have any dreams, except only receive money for wants, he would become money-addicted and spend it quickly and more than that, he maybe get into the debts. Thus, it depends on person and his character and strong thoughts, he must think about his own future for himself and future of his children. Will you live in the lap of luxury or even without a penny to your name? Make your own choice, it is up to you!

I think that everything depends on man. If all what you want is just money, they can make you happy. But anyway someday you'll find that there are a lot of more important things in this life. For example, you'll never buy family or love, but you can't live without them. Somewhere in vk i read these words: you can buy bed, but you can't buy sleep. You can buy house, but you can't buy home. You can buy sex, but you can't buy love. I like these words, they are truly. So i think that money is just something that comes, and goes away. And such things as love, health, family, and friends are the most important one. Money can just make your life better, but they can't give you happiness.

okay, for me if i have a child, i can never sell my child even how much money someone pays me because my child is my happiness. or lets say you have all the money in the world but someone you love was diagnosed very ill , cannot be cured, and will die in a few days by the best doctor in the world you paid.Even if you give all your money to the doctor, that someone will still die. or if you have all the money in the world but youre stuck on a deserted island alone and nobody can find you there until you die, will you be happy?.Can money give you happiness?I think with money we can pursue happiness.. but its not a guarantee that we can buy happiness with money.

There is no guarantee that money can buy happiness, but one thing is for certain, a lack of money (i.e. poverty) will make most people unhappy!

Side: Gimme money!!!

No it can't directly but it can provide financial security which can create a feeling of safety, this can lead to a relaxed life= happiness.

And in reverse a lack of money can lead to financial hardship which causes stress= less happiness

Money can buy happiness.

For Example: With money you can buy a jet ski, you ride the jet ski and you are not sad, you are happy. Have you seen anyone on a Jet Ski who is sad? Pretty sure not. Also, the fuel for the Jet Ski isn't that expensive which means that the happiness can last for a long time.

The answer is clear when you apply a "Necessary or Sufficient" standard to assess it.

Is it "sufficient" to have money to be completely happy? No. No of course not. And this is where examples of love and health and quality of life come in.

Is it "necessary" to have money to be completely happy? Oh, absolutely. Until aliens conquer the planet and abolish the whole concept of money you will always need some of it in some form in order to eat and survive.

Basically, if as a youngster fresh out of school you pursue happiness with zero attention to the money then you have fun for a remarkably short time and then crash and fail and end up living with your parents again. Which will probably make you unhappy for the rest of your life.

Let me share with you just how much of a game-changer the Bonoloto checking service has been for me. Before using this service, checking my ticket against the results was always a stressful and time-consuming process. I'd anxiously wait for the results to be announced on TV or search through the newspaper, and it often felt like a race against time. But now, thanks to this service, all of that hassle has disappeared. I can simply input my ticket number on the website, and within moments, the results are displayed right in front of me. It's such a relief https://comprobar-bonoloto.es/ knowing that I can quickly and easily check my Bonoloto results anytime, anywhere. Plus, the option to verify the results using QR codes adds an extra layer of convenience. Overall, this service has truly transformed the way I play the Bonoloto, and I couldn't be happier with the results.

Years ago I would have said a clear conscience, security and love give you true happiness, but then along comes someone with an accusation that you dont have the money to fight and you get stuck in a whirlwind of the destruction of everything you have struggled for, finding the love that you thought existed, didn't, there is no security and a clear conscience means nothing when someone has the means and support behind their lies. Give me money any day. At least then there would be an even footing and the provisions for proving innoscence.
